Learn a Song
What
You Need
-
a copy of the song (see below)
-
maracas, drums, tambourines, or other rhythm instruments
-
large newsprint pad and felt marker
What
You Do
In Advance
-
Print the English and Spanish words to the song on newsprint and post where
everyone cansee it.
-
Collect the maracas, if you chose that activity, and other instruments.
With the Children
-
Tell the children that they are going to learn a song written by a U. S.
missionary for the Reformed Church of Cuba. It is based on a story in Nehemiah
2:18 about rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem.
-
Sing the song in English for the children. Then have them sing along with
you.
-
When the children are familiar with the tune, tell them that it can be
sung in a round, either with three parts or six. Divide the group into
parts, with an older child who is a stronger singer in each part. Then
try singing the song in a round.
-
Now sing the song to the children in Spanish. Point out that there are
only three phrases in the song. The first two are almost the same, and
the third is repeated three times. Invite the children to try singing with
you in Spanish.
-
Teach the children the following actions:
-
Join hands as you sing "Vengan, vengan todo" ("Come ev'rybody")
-
Stand as you sing "Vengen, levantemonos" ("Come now, let us all rise up")
-
Raise joined hands as you sing "Edifiquemos, juntos" ("Let us all build
together")
-
Now have the children use rhythm instruments to accompany the song.
