Make Flan

Flan is a custard dessert enjoyed in many Latin American countries. This recipe serves four to six. The melted brown sugar is very hot, so be sure you or another adult closely supervises this activity to be sure no one is burned.

What You Need

  • electric skillet (be sure the room has an outlet)
  • measuring cup
  • large spoon
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 box vanilla pudding
  • 3 cups milk
  • custard cups or dessert dishes
  • small plates and spoons
What You Do
  1. Dissolve the brown sugar in water.
  2. Cook the mixture in electric skillet at moderate heat until the sugar caramelizes. Spoon some of the caramelized sugar into each custard cup or dish.
  3. Let the children stir the pudding mix and the milk in a large bowl according to package directions. Help them pour the mixture into the prepared cups or dishes.
  4. Let the flans set for one hour to cool.
  5. Unmold onto plates for serving. Enjoy!
