ELMC is an umbrella.

ELMC is an umbrella - currently 15 ecumenical program committees and two project teams  working in diverse areas of educational ministry. These committees represent the work that the denominations do together to support local congregations in educational ministry.

Program ministries have been organized into five foci:

Umbrella Curriculum and leader formation
Umbrella Racial/ethnic culture and specific ministries
Umbrella Family and age level ministries
Umbrella Special needs and settings
Umbrella
Projects/explorations

ELMC committees are working groups that continue to generate materials for church education leaders, plan training events, and provide an ecumenical forum for inter-denominational exchange and planning.

Overall direction to Education and Leadership Ministries Commission is provided by the 27 member Program Board, representing 21 denominations. In 2000-2001, the Ministries in Christian Education Program Board undertook a major initiative to combat racism involving all the program committees in its scope.
