Communications Justice and Advocacy Intern

The National Council of Churches is the leading ecumenical organization among Christians in the United States. It encompasses 35 member communions including the major Protestant, Anglican and Orthodox communions, African-American denominations and historic peace churches. The Council serves as both a convener and voice for a faith constituency of almost 50 million people and 100,000 congregations in all 50 states. Position Description:

The Communications Intern, based in Washington, DC, will work with NCC program staff to voice the religious communities’ positions on justice and advocacy issues within the faith community and develop appropriate outreach and education tools for the faith community on justice and advocacy issues.

Job Description

Communication and Website Intern, New York City

Position Description

 Communications Intern – Women’s Ministries 

General Description

Program for Women’s Ministries of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC) includes: the work of the NCC Justice for Women Working Group, Young Women’s Leadership Opportunities and Women’s Leadership Development.  The Justice for Women Working Group currently has four primary focus areas:  Human Trafficking, Domestic Violence, Language – Inclusive and Expansive, and Poverty.  Young Women’s Leadership Experience involves connecting women ages 18 to 30 years old with ongoing opportunities in the ecumenical movement.  Women’s Leadership Development includes networking women within the ecumenical movement and society to further their leadership skill and opportunities.  The NCC Program for Women’s Ministries also includes maintenance of historical records of women’s involvement in the ecumenical movement within the USA as well as addressing current issues of injustice related to gender within the ecumenical movement and society at large.  In recent years as many NCC member communions have decrease staff and budgets the intentional work on gender justice has suffered. The ability to accurately record history, track trends, provide resources and network women has become increasingly important to do in ecumenical partnership for the wise use of funds and human resources.  This internship will assist with several critical projects to enhance communication elements of the ongoing work of the NCC Program for Women’s Ministries.    

Specific Tasks

Following the instructions and guidance provided by NCC staff, this intern will work on the following projects:

  • Assist in analyzing data and formulating a report on the “Faith and Feminism” workbook focus group project, including updating website with quotes and stories.
  • Assist in updating NCC webpage and resource information on Women’s History Month.
  • Assist in organizing, documenting and archiving past NCC Women’s Ministry files so that essential data can be accessed for use in communicating the story of women’s leadership in the ecumenical movement in the USA.
  • Assist in updating NCC webpage and resources information on Domestic Violence.
  • Work with subcommittee of Justice for Women Working Group on language project assisting in development of resource related to expansive and inclusive language through the lens of power, gender, race, class, cultural traditions and it’s impact on mission
  • Communicate with member communions of NCC to connect data on Women in Ministry in order to respond to media inquires.
  • Communicate with ecumenical network on collection of data for “Human Trafficking Survey”.   

Position Requirements

As an internship position requires applicant for this position to be graduate student in theology, social work, public policy, gender, or communication field and hold a BA or BS degree.  The position can be used in fulfillment of practical experience credit with prior consent of the Program Director for Women’s Ministries of the NCC.  Ordinarily this position will require presence in the NCC office approximately 6 to 10 hours per week from February to mid-June with the possibility of increasing hours to full time from mid-June through beginning of August. 

A successful candidate for the internship will:

  • have an interest in communication, social networking and internet communication,
  • have an interest in gender justice, women’s ministries and the ecumenical movement in USA,
  • have good interpersonal relations skills and telephone manner,
  • have solid writing and oral communication skills,
  • have good organizational skills,
  • be able to work both independently and collaboratively,
  • will have interest and aptitude in assessing and adapting educational materials for electronic use. 

Organizational Fit

This position is supervised by the Director of  the NCC Program for Women’s Ministries and consults with Media Relations Specialist.  This is a seven month position, with the possibility of increasing to full time during summer months.  The intern will have the opportunity to attend meetings related to assigned projects as the budget permits.

Position Description

Health Network Internship- Network &Web Development 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

            This intern position is created to assist in the continued development of the ecumenical Health Task Force which serves as the primary point of focus for the NCC’s health care advocacy.  The Health Task Force, with more than one third of the member communions as well as specialized ecumenical health related groups has been in place for over three years. The Task Force relates to a NCC Health Network comprised primarily of congregations of member communions that are concerned with some aspect of health education, direct service or policy advocacy.  To address the interests and concerns of the Network the Health Task Force has developed three foci including; Network development and capacity building, Health Care Policy Reform, and Emergency Preparedness.   

            This internship works in close collaboration with staff colleagues, consultants and constituent members of the Health Task Force in serving to develop the Health Network and Website.  Member communions and state and local councils of churches are primary contacts for developing the Network. The website serves as a primary education and communications tool for the Network. (The website is maintained off site and is not the responsibility of this position. Co-ordination with the web master re: content is however an important priority for this position.) 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

            Following instructions and guidance provided by staff and consultants, this intern:

  • Makes contact with non-participating communions acquainting them with the work of the Task Force and discovering areas of mutual interest
  • Works with existing groups and networks within participating communions to discover the ways in which the Task Force might better serve the needs of pre-existing groups
  • Contact state and local councils of churches to explore and record the varieties of ways these bodies relate to health care needs and issues within their respective areas
  • Furnish timely reports of these and other outreach contacts to the Task Force along with any programmatic recommendations designed to better serve the ecumenical community
  • Electronically “visit” websites of Task Force members to assess the ways in which the website information of the Task Force interfaces with members’ own sites.
  • Electronically “visit” websites of health coaltions regularly reporting items of interest, potential coalitional partners and allied groups in relation to public policy reform and emergency preparedness

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

            As an internship it is assumed that applicants for this position will be graduate students in theology, social work, health fields, or public policy and will hold a BA or BS degree. Position Description 

Health Intern- Policy Reform Research 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

            The Health Task Force of the NCC includes among its three foci responsibility to give leadership to the NCC’s efforts related to health care policy reform.  While both the NCC and many of its member communions have long standing policy positions related to health care these policies are neither current nor in total accord with one another.  This internship is being initiated in order to provide support to the Health Task Force, its staff and consultants in formulating an ecumenical response to contemporary efforts in the area of national health care policy. 

            While recent years have seen the deterioration of the effectiveness America’s health care policy with growing numbers of persons lacking health care insurance and similar growth in the disparity of health care quality and affordability.  With the economic downturn and expected increases in unemployment the near future projections are for a worsening of the effectiveness of health care policy in the United States.  Several states are presently experimenting with various forms of universal health care and important commitments have been made by national leaders to take up the wholesale reform of health policy.  The NCC and its member communions, long advocates for universal health care will increasingly be called upon to provide education and leadership in the advocacy of this policy reform.  This internship will play a crucial role in enabling the development of a viable and effective approach to this important social justice matter. 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

            This position provides support for a 5-8 hour per week position which will enable to incumbent to:

  • Analyze the NCC policy provisions in relation to the policy stances of its member communions, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and other religious bodies
  • Prepare summary reports of this analysis for the NCC  Health Task Force
  • Keep current on pending legislation and provide analysis on the degree to which such legislation would address the standards of NCC policy in reports to the NCC Health Task Force
  • Regularly prepare updates on the various health care coalitions working for policy reform in relation to NCC policy stances and advocacy efforts
  • Suggest talking points, educational and/or advocacy strategies which may grow out of the policy research on health care

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

            The successful candidate for this internship will be a graduate student engaged in an area of study such as ethics, public health administration, government or a related field.  Strong evidence of a sophisticated knowledge of health policy and strong writing skills are imperative.  The intern should be familiar with the advocacy history of the churches and their exercise of moral authority on behalf of the common good. This intern should have the ability to work independently and complete assignments in a timely manner. The location and time commitment of this position are negotiable.  

ORGANIZATIONAL FIT

            This position reports to the Senior Program Director for Education and Leadership Ministries and provides reports to the Health Task Force, its staff and consultants.  In collaboration with these colleagues the intern helps prepare portions of the research for dissemination via the Task Force and/or NCC websites, press releases, testimony, etc.  The intern participates in discussion with NCC staff and consultants in the development of policy advocacy strategies and their implementation.

Eco-Justice Advocacy and Outreach Intern

The National Council of Churches is the leading ecumenical organization among Christians in the United States. Since the 1980s, the Council and its member communions have worked to address environmental issues from a faith perspective. The Council’s environmental program has built a communion and congregational base over a span of more than 25 years and has helped the faith-based environmental movement grow in voice, vision, and capacity. The program identifies issues and spreads worship and mission materials that carry the message of protecting God’s creation.   

Position Description:

The Advocacy and Outreach Intern, based in Washington, DC, will work with the Director and Assistant Directors of the NCC Eco-Justice Program, to voice the religious communities’ positions on protecting God’s world through environmental health, climate and energy issues, and other top issues to elected officials; and help promote environmental issues within the faith community.  

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist with developing an appropriate outreach and advocacy for a variety of our campaigns and initiatives, including, but not limited to: climate change, green building, environmental health, and public land protection.
