Membership

The Long Island Council of Churches is the coordinating body for the ecumenical work of Protestant Churches in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, New York. It was formed in 1969, through the merger of separate, pre-existing groups in the two counties: Nassau County Council of Churches and the Suffolk County Council of Churches. All Protestant denominations and individual churches are eligible for membership.

Mission Statement

Recognizing that we are not alone but called to oneness in Jesus Christ, the Long Island Council of Churches works to bring together all local congregations and denominations to unite in deepening community life among the people of Long Island working and serving together to be a living symbol of God's presence.

Major Activities

The program of The Long Island Council of Churches is the cumulative product of The Council's responses over the years to perceived community needs when opportunity arose and available resources allowed. Among our activities are an annual migrant farm worker dinner in Riverhead, NY and an annual Easter dawn service in Eisenhower Park in Nassau County. Other activities which serve the physically or spiritually needy, and for which County and/or Federal funding have made major programs possible, are the Emergency Food Center and the Chaplaincy program in Nassau County institutions. Another program, recently developed, is an AIDS education program for clergy and laity, and training workshops.

We Also Want You to Know ...

The Long Island Council of Churches operates its multi-faceted program from two offices; one in Hempstead, NY, and the other in Riverhead, NY, as well as a separately housed Emergency Food Center in Hempstead. A staff of 20 full and part-time people operate the programs under the direction of Executive Director, the Rev. Tom Goodhue, and is guided and supported by a Board of Governors.
